The Call

You left her to answer the call
Of golden hills to out the west
You promised to return by fall
You said you’d bring her the best
She cried, her head on your chest
And said, just come back at all

You promised to return by fall
But summer is quickly fading
Without having any luck at all
Yourself you are persuading
That one more week is all you need

One week turns to two, then three
As winter begins to settle in
You promised to return by fall
But you can’t return without a win

The ice broke and let him fall
His dying lips could only call
A promise, to return by fall

Fighting

Chasing shadows, fighting air
Yet no one seems to see the foe
You only look at me and stare

But I cannot stop, it isn’t fair!
For you to never ever know
I’m chasing shadows, fighting air

I see when there is nothing there
You do not see their menace grow
You only look at me and stare

They lie in darkness, waiting to tear
Any skin that we might show
Chasing our shadows, fighting air

Every time you step into their lair
You do not see the coming woe
You only look at me and stare

My love you must be (doubly) ware
You know not where you go
You’re chasing shadows, fighting air
Yet you look at me and only stare.

Sole

He returned from the sea
With a head that was low
And walked straight to the she
He had loved long ago

With a day that was full
Of sole and of cod
He was tired of the hull
He was ‘custommed to trod

But when home is the place
Where the woman is king
The man hides his face
And backs out of the ring

So he’ll walk tired steps back
To the net and the pole
Though the waters are black
Here she can’t take his soul

Limerick?

Once there was a girl who said
Every single thing in her head
One day she said too
Much that was not true
And her cheeks never ceased to be red

Running

I’m good at running, running away
I’ve done it all my life
See, I no longer believe in “someday”
I know joy turns to strife

‘Cause I know that while you’ll smile
Today, tomorrow you won't
They only stay for a little while
My heart is full of "don't"

So if I’m good at running, I guess in the end
I’m running from the problem dubbed “me”
It’s hard to live life without any friends
But it’s harder to watch them leave

Worth It

Please don’t think that I am worth it
You see others have, like you
They’ve invested time in the girl called me
And they’ve found out what is true
You see, once they get beneath the hair
The eyes and maybe the smile
They find what’s really under there
And they might even stay awhile

                But what’s underneath is dirt
                It’s selfish and unkind
It’s so full of pain and hurt
                It cannot seem to unwind

And like the rest, you will leave
You’ll get in and get out
But if you left I could not relieve
The hurt of you tearing out

So please don’t think I am worth it
                Please just leave me alone
See, I know just exactly what on earth it
                Is that makes me
                Alone.
